English philosopher who studied under *Ryle at Oxford and then in Vienna before returning to Oxford (1933) to lecture in philosophy. He became Grote Professor of the Philosophy of Mind and Logic at London University (1946) and Wykeham Professor of Logic at Oxford (1959). He was knighted in 1970.
Naturally Aquinas's philosophy of physics has been antiquated by the progress of natural science, and his philosophy of logic has been rendered archaic by the development of mathematical logic and the reflection of philosophers and mathematicians in the hundred years since Frege. But his contributions to metaphysics, philosophy of religion, philosophical psychology, and moral philosophy entitle him to an enduring place in the first rank of philosophers. In metaphysics Aquinas applies the Aristotelian distinction between actuality and potentiality to a wide variety of topics and problems.
