The material offered here will attest to his storytelling prowess, and his writing is appealing whether it deals with a daring hunt, studies in natural history, or more mundane subjects. That is why he was so popular when he was alive and has continued to be so—as repeated reprints of his books indicate—in the fourscore years since his death. The literary legacy offered here is vintage Selous, but what sets it apart is that it does not come, at least insofar as my researches have been able to determine, from his books.

Then, too, there were the considerable joys connected with watching his sons grow up, as they followed in his footsteps to Rugby School and had incomparable opportunities to garner sporting wisdom from the quintessential parental mentor. Thanks to his active life, Selous was remarkably youthful for an individual of more than threescore years, and doubtless having sired sons rather late in life contributed to his youthful perspective. Thus it was that, when war broke out in 1914, he felt quite capable, as an unabashed patriot and man of military mien, of direct participation.
