20 INTRODUCTION TO GASTRO-ENTEROLOGY In one of the dogs used by Wilhelmj and Finegan ( 1 9 3 8 ) after a Mann-Williamson operation, fecal matter and even actual lumps of feces sometimes ran back into the stomach. A rush wave, when traveling caudad, is helped by the fact that wherever the muscle contracts the ring that forms tends to move caudad. Moreover, if because of nervous conduction, a contraction ring should appear out some distance ahead of the advancing column of fluid, any wave which might start from this contraction would not get in the way because it would promptly move caudad.

Still more remarkable is the ability of a rush wave to go through long segments of boiled bowel, or bowel paralyzed by nicotine, or even rubber tubing. Once through the inert tube, the wave goes on down through the normal bowel. Important as the column of fluid is, it is not all important, as was shown by a simple experiment. If the column were the essential part of the mechanism, then it should be as easy to make waves run orad as it is to make them run caudad ; all one would have to do would be to inject fluid into the caudal end of the gut.
