Even after he was fatally wounded, he continued to fire his rifle as he bled to death. Next to him was a lad of about seventeen, shot through the heart. A short distance away, Churchill came upon two Boers, each shot in the head. Rather than return home, Churchill rejoined the army of General Redvers Buller on its march to relieve the British at the Siege of Ladysmith and to take Pretoria, South Africa’s capital. For four months, the British fought without success. But on March 3, 1900, Churchill’s account of the final victory appeared in the Morning Post.

The tour was covered by the British newspapers, and the satirical weekly Punch published dispatches lampooning the journey. In one such spoof, Churchill met “Twysta, Chief of the Pozas, a very intelligent tribe,” who asked who ruled England while he was away and when he intended to provide Lord Elgin with a pension. Churchill’s safari in Uganda included more than 300 African porters, prompting an American traveler to say that the safari’s path could be traced by the empty champagne and beer bottles Churchill left in his wake.
