While some learners do succeed in developing many of the features of autonomy through the experience of learning in distance mode, they are unlikely to do so without appropriate support and intervention, and we ‘cannot make any assumptions or expectations about learners’ willingness or ability to become autonomous learners’ (Hurd, 1998b: 222), just because they are adults and have chosen for whatever reason to learn at a distance. For distance learning, any attempts at pedagogic intervention to promote autonomy through the use and transfer of strategies must take place via the materials and tutor feedback on assignments, as attendance at tutorials is optional and cannot therefore be guaranteed.
