I have to say that the whole dating issue is about as confused as it could be, except what most scientists say is not right. At the beginning, there were all kinds of perturbations that make it totally unreliable to go back and try to extrapolate as most people do. In any case, most of the dating is inconsistent. What I really want to talk about, and I’m not surprised that Professor Davies stayed away from it, is the origin of life. It’s an absolute mess. There are hundreds of hypotheses and no one has the first clue what they mean or add up to.

But then what happens? Noah gets drunk and one of his kids makes fun of the old man while 42 Chapter Two he’s lying there naked and out of it. It seems like sin has not gone after all. That for me is the real message—at least, one of the real messages—of Noah. Going at a serious problem and thinking that all you need to do is wipe everything out and start again is basically not going to solve your problem. This for me is why the Bible is such a living document. It has nothing to do with geology and certainly has nothing to do with all of that stuff about Armageddon and Jesus coming again to do all of that fighting.

My God is working with us, helping to shape existence as a cocreator. I expect things to go wrong or to be rough at the edges. That is what a state of becoming rather than a state of being requires. So, in that sense, I am very much an integrationist. My science and my theology are as one. But, note that I am not doing traditional natural theology. I am not proving God from nature. I am saying that my view of nature and my view of God are one and the same. On this whole matter, Program Two: Origins 45 I am very much in agreement with the greatest British church figure since the Reformation, from the nineteenth century, John Henry Newman, who started life as an Anglican and then converted to Roman Catholicism and ended as a cardinal.
