The work of Thorne and others clearly illustrates that while language learners may be open to the use of online technologies for their language learning, it should not be taken as a given that online activity will be taken up without question. Online language learning has to make sense to learners in their particular context and it has to be seen to be making a practical contribution to how they learn. Furthermore, the tasks should be seen to use communication tools in a fashion that is coherent with their habitual uses in society.

These tasks may require the use of formal or academic registers in the target language, well developed sociopragmatic sensitivity in text-based intercultural communication and a high level of language awareness about the target language and the L1. As such, there can be a clear difference between the forms of literacy that informal or recreational online interaction may involve and those required by more formal online learning activity. Inevitably, this issue highlights the need for foreign language educators to consider such concepts as the digital divide and electronic literacies.
