Only to a first approximation is the Sun steady and spherically symmetric. A more detailed inspection reveals fully three-dimensional small scale turbulent motions and magnetic fields together with larger scale flows and magnetic fields that lack any symmetry.

There are many types of nonlinear waves in the solar–terrestrial environment both on the macroscopic and on the microscopic scales. Examples of nonlinear waves on the microscopic scales are solitons and double layers. Well-known examples of macroscopic-scale nonlinear waves is the collisionless shock waves. An ion-acoustic soliton results from a balance between wave steepening and wave dispersion. Without wave dispersion, the natural tendency of a wave to steepen, which happens due to the nonlinearity of the medium, will lead to wave breaking.
