If she is not you will be wasting your time and you’ll get very frustrated into the bargain. All activities rely on there being a number of skills in place already – rather like building blocks. It may be that you have to take a step backwards and address the building blocks first before tackling the target skill. A very extreme example is learning to write. This is very complex and requires a range of skills: a child needs the balance to sit at a table, the hand strength to hold her pencil with the appropriate pressure, the correct grasp to grip her pencil, the shoulder strength to stabilise her arm, the understanding of moving across the page from left to right, the idea that writing is a form of communication and finally the motivation to have a go.

For many children with special needs this can be difficult. To help them concentrate on what they are doing it is best to cut out any competing noise from television, radio and music. This is particularly important if your child has any hearing loss or language delay because she will need to give her full attention to what you are saying and other noises will only serve to confuse. Distractions It can be hard to keep spaces tidy and clear but if you have a child who is very easily distracted then it is worth trying to keep your house clear of unnecessary clutter.

Another child might be more motivated by using pegs to hang out the washing on the line or by making herself look like a hedgehog using pegs as prickles attached to her clothes. WHAT EVERYONE NEEDS TO KNOW Make activities interesting Find ways to introduce variety into activities, otherwise you and your child will get bored and lose motivation. Use different materials and toys if you can and try to extend games by introducing new ideas so they can be taken further. Use your child’s interests Sometimes you can use a child’s interests and obsessions as a way into an activity that she would usually avoid.
