So whether a retail customer wants to borrow a small amount of money or a corporate customer wants to borrow a large sum of money, in both cases the branch is just the link between the customer and the bank, which in the diagram is evidenced by the Head Office. Rather than just thinking generically about Head Office it is now time for us to start thinking about how the bank manages these cash flows and so we should take a look at the treasury department where we will begin to see how and why these commercial banks have to be so active in the financial markets.

Since each deal is with an individual the sums of money involved are very small in banking terms, per deal. However it is when all these small deals are put together that the bank finds itself facing large exposures, but we will look at this in a little while. On the corporate side, the same basic idea applies but the size of the deals can vary enormously. If one of your corporate customers is a large multinational firm, conducting business internationally, and regularly requiring large-scale funding, then this customer cannot be compared to a small enterprise, maybe something like a shop, which would typically want very similar services to the retail customer, maybe on just a slightly larger scale.
