Now on my own, I sat down to rest before contemplating the solo trip out. Fortunately, a light in the distance heralded the arrival of Peter Bolt from the University of Cardiff caving club, and we shared some food before he escorted me out. My morale was further raised when I met some familiar faces from the Bristol Exploration Club (BEC) en route, and we all exited together. I can’t have been too fazed, though, by my second aborted trip into Daren Cilau, because I returned the next day with another group of students.
Hourly we got up and jogged to the First Boulder Choke to warm up. We swapped jokes to keep up morale. At 4 am we ate our remaining food. At 8 am we went to the entrance to be let out, since by then somebody would surely have noticed that we were missing. Meanwhile, back at Whitewalls, everyone was getting up. ) for my head and assumed that I was still slumbering. Eventually it was realised that we were still underground; Jack Upsall (one of the guys who had helped carry our gear into the cave) was dispatched with a spare key to check up on us, and a rescue callout was started as a precaution.
